In this video, I got the chance to talk to Dr. Andrew Cameron about pulsars and neutron stars. Neutron stars and pulsars are some of the weirdest objects in the universe and in this video, Dr. Cameron explains what the different types of pulsars are.
Contents of Video
0:00 – Intro
0:46 – How to Classify Pulsars
1:33 – First Type of Pulsar
2:18 – Second Type
4:48 – Third Type of Pulsars
6:40 – Fourth Type
8:30 – Pulsar-Black Hole system
Andrew completed his PhD in Germany at the University of Bonn and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in 2018. In his doctoral research, he investigated new methods of discovering pulsars and found 40 new pulsars using the Parkes Radio Telescope in Australia.
He then moved to Australia to take up a postdoc with the CSIRO, once again using the Parkes telescope to confirm and study new pulsar discoveries being made with the new FAST telescope in China, the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope.
Currently he is working with Swinburne University of Technology as part of the ARC Centre of Excellent for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav). His research interests include the long-term study of unusual binary pulsars in order to determine their evolutionary history, the study of relativistic binary pulsars and how they can be used to produce new tests of theories of gravity like Einstein’s General Relativity, and the support of pulsar timing array projects using both the Parkes and MeerKAT telescopes to detect low-frequency gravitational waves.
Welcome to ‘The Astropods’! Here at ‘The Astropods’, our host brings astronomers and other people passionate about the universe in from all across the world to share their experience and thoughts on various topics in astronomy, astrophysics and more. This podcast experience allows you to understand more about the universe and gets the latest updates in astronomy directly from the experts.
Our host is Rudra Sekhri, a student passionate about astronomy and climatology. He’s been working with astronomers over the past few years on various research projects using some of the biggest telescopes (Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope). Rudra has been studying pulsars and Fast Radio Bursts with astronomers from universities across Australia.
Rudra is also the author of ‘The Earth Needs You’, a book describing how people can get started in sustainable living. This book is available on Amazon using the link below.
